Urad Dal Fry

Fried split black Gram lentil with spices

Serving 4-6 persons

Preparation Time: 15 minutes

Cooking Time: 40 minutes



1 CupSabut Urd (Kalli Dal)
1 LargeFinely Chopped Onion
2 TablespoonsTomato Paste
1 TablespoonGinger Paste
1 TablespoonFinely Chopped Green Chillies
1 TeaspoonGarlic Paste
0.5 CupCooking Oil

Dry Spices

1 TeaspoonCumin Seeds
2 Pinches of Hing
6 Whole Red Chillies
1 TeaspoonGaram Masala
1 TablespoonCoriander Powder
1 TeaspoonTurmeric Powder
Salt To Taste



  1. Clean and wash dal and cook it in 5 cups of water and one tea spoon of salt in a pressure cooker for 20-25 minutes at high flame.

  2. In a frying pan heat oil add hing cook it for 30 seconds and add cumin and red chillies. When cumin changes color add onions.

  3. Fry onions till they turn golden brown and then add chilies, garlic and ginger paste and cook it for 1 minute and then add turmeric powder, garam masala, coriander powder and salt.

  4. Cook it for 1 -2 minutes at medium flame then add tomatoes and cook masala till it separates the oil.

  5. Open pressure cooker when all the pressure is released and add this cooked masala to it.

  6. When you serve it add some clarified butter (Desi Ghee) as garnish it enhances the taste of dal and serve it with rice, chapatti or makki ki roti.
